Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-created media appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features in excess of 1 billion AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The new functionality is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a widespread launch. This advancement aligns with a surge in AI content, driven by new content generation software.
AI Proliferation Online
Studies have shown that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.
Our research shows that many people like content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to give people the ability to increase or decrease of that, according to their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
TikTok disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network identified as made with AI. In total, more than 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the service each day, making AI content a limited percentage of its total content library.
Customizing Your Feed
Users will be able to decrease or raise the amount of AI content they watch by accessing the “manage topic” setting in the platform and picking “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be modified under the setting cover politics, fashion, beauty, and dance.
Content Labeling and Policies
Its guidelines mandate content makers to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans malicious fake videos of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.
Furthermore, the platform will now apply an AI-generated watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is intended to stop users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.
Responsible AI Funding
The platform is also launching a two million dollar educational fund for specialists and organizations to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist educational bodies dedicated to educating coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
The platform has justified its content review process, amid controversy over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. It is set to cut 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with labor groups and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
