Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims First Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 titles have been won on hard courts

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden title for over two years with success over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has experienced a difficult period, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - led to him falling of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.

Currently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually improved in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested three-set win over Frenchman Moutet.

This marks the player's maiden trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard surface since spring of 2023.

Success also signifies he has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my both daughters at once, so to get a title is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my younger daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I won when my first daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six finals, including in the German tournament in the past months.

His counter-punching play style and recurring reactions on the playing surface had caused observers to doubt if his skill to compete at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the player has made changes in the past month, striving to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved serve.

He fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging Moutet, taking four of the concluding five games to go ahead.

The pair traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his initial ATP Tour championship, gained dominance to push for a decider.

He saved 4 early break points in a close third set before Medvedev won the break to that score to secure the win.

Appropriately, the winner clinched the win with a point at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
