The public service broadcaster committed a "serious breach" of industry standards by omitting to mention that the narrator of a film about Gaza was the child of a Hamas administrator, as ruled by regulatory body Ofcom.
An probe by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the programme was "significantly deceptive".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had already issued an apology, saying there had been "a significant failing in relation to factual correctness".
The authority has instructed the corporation to transmit a evening statement about its decisions.
"As this represents a significant violation of our rules, we are directing the corporation to air a statement of our conclusions against it on BBC Two at 21:00, with a date to be finalised," the statement read.
'Possibility to Undermine Trust'
The authority's report stated: "Our investigation determined that the programme's failure to disclose that the voice's father served in a role in the Hamas-controlled government was significantly deceptive.
"It meant that the public did not have critical information which may have been very significant to their judgment of the narrator and the content he provided.
"Trust is at the heart of the relationship between a television network and its viewers, notably for a state-funded media outlet such as the public broadcaster.
"This oversight had the potential to undermine the significantly high degrees of confidence that viewers would have put in a factual film from the broadcaster about the Gaza conflict."
The programme was removed from the online platform in February after the presenter's familial connections emerged, and in the month of July an corporation's own inquiry determined it violated the corporation's editorial guidelines on factual correctness.
A corporation official commented: "The regulator's decision is in line with the findings of the internal assessment, that there was a major oversight in the documentary in relation to the broadcaster's journalistic policies on accuracy, which reflects clause 2.2 of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code.
"We have apologised for this and we accept the regulator's ruling in complete. We will comply with the sanction as soon as the date and language are finalised."
